English Definition
The situation in which the cash a business or project generates over a period exceeds its cash outflows in the same period, measuring, unlike accounting profit, actual cash movement rather than accrual. In project finance, because debt service is met from operating cash flow rather than profit, a project can default even while appearing profitable on the books if its cash flow is insufficient, which is why lenders compute the DSCR on cash rather than earnings. Where the timing of positive cash flow does not align with the debt repayment schedule, cash-sweep mechanisms that automatically direct surplus cash to principal repayment come into play.
