English Definition
The removal of government-imposed price controls so that prices come to be set by the market, a characteristic policy-risk event in transition and emerging markets. In areas such as energy tariffs the timing of price decontrol determines when a project's revenue model reaches cost-reflective tariffs; where the revenue assumption rests on a decontrol that has not yet occurred, lenders price the risk that the policy step is delayed or reversed by demanding additional security or a tariff guarantee, since a stalled decontrol strands the base case on tariffs that do not cover cost.
