English Definition
The deviation of prices from the level a free market would set, caused by subsidy, control, taxation or monopoly power. Subsidised tariffs distort project economics; development finance institutions separately assess whether a project's returns rest on a price distortion likely to be reformed, since the removal of a subsidy is a structural risk to the revenue line. Where an investment's profitability depends on a distortion persisting, that profitability is in truth as temporary as the policy behind it, and lenders fold this into the tenor risk they price rather than treat it as durable.
