English Definition
An actor whose own supply or demand is too small to influence the market price and which must therefore accept the prevailing price as given. The typical producer in a competitive market occupies this position: it cannot bargain over price, only decide whether to produce at it. A power project operating on a merchant basis — with no fixed offtaker — is a price taker by nature, which leads lenders to test debt-service capacity against conservative price scenarios and, consequently, to accept lower leverage.
