English Definition
A separate legal entity, often single-purpose, established to own, finance, and operate a project, the special-purpose vehicle at the center of project financing. Its core function is to isolate risk; the project entity's assets and liabilities are segregated from the sponsor's balance sheet, so that on default the lender's recourse is typically confined to the project. The experienced reader knows this isolation is imperfect; completion guarantees, sponsor support letters, and certain covenants keep open thin channels of recourse reaching from inside the non-recourse structure back to the sponsor.
