English Definition
The party who makes a promise or assumes the obligation to pay or perform; in a promissory note, the maker who undertakes to pay the stated sum is the promissor. In project financing this role typically surfaces in sponsor completion undertakings or in bare debt instruments, where enforceability against the promissor turns on formalities such as negotiability and, in certain jurisdictions, stamp duty. Whether the note is freely transferable by endorsement determines the creditor's ability to assign the claim and thereby monetize it before maturity.
