English Definition
The character of a right, asset or information being specific to its owner and exclusive, that is, closed to unauthorized use by third parties. Abstract as this quality may seem, its financial consequence is concrete: whether an interest is proprietary or merely personal determines priority at default and insolvency, while the proprietary character of information or technology allows it to become a source of collateral or licensing income. In project finance the proprietary nature of an asset both turns it into transferable, pledgeable security and, through its non-substitutability, can heighten supplier-dependence risk; the same quality yields leverage or fragility depending on context.
