English Definition
A closed network that a single institution owns, operates and whose access terms it alone sets; across fields from payment systems to telecommunications infrastructure and distribution lines, and unlike open, shared networks, it gives its owner control over all traffic and data on the network. This ownership is an economic lever: as the network effect strengthens, the owner's pricing power and barrier to entry rise, which is precisely the monopolistic or quasi-monopolistic revenue quality that makes infrastructure investment attractive. Against this, because proprietary networks are increasingly subject to access and non-discrimination regulation, the project's revenue model must internalize the risk of regulatory intervention.
