English Definition
The reservations, exceptions or caveats an auditor or expert attaches to an otherwise clean opinion or statement, recording a bounded doubt about the reliability of specified items. The same word can denote the attributes that establish a bidder's eligibility, but in a financial context its dominant sense is the limitation placed on an opinion. In credit agreements a qualification in the audit report, while rarely an event of default in itself, tends to trigger notification and lender-consultation covenants that set the covenant architecture in motion.
