English Definition
The ratio of a country's gold reserves to its import volume, a historical indicator of external payment capacity and reserve adequacy. Though gold alone is less used today, the same logic persists for total international reserves and forms a component of country-risk assessment. In cross-border project finance such reserve metrics indirectly price the host country's currency-transfer and convertibility risk, and a weak reserve position frequently leads a lender to demand political-risk insurance or an offshore account structure.
