English Definition
The ratio obtained by dividing a country's foreign-exchange and gold reserves by its monthly import level, read as months of import cover. A threshold of roughly three months' imports is commonly treated as minimum reserve adequacy. In project financings conducted in emerging markets this measure connects directly to convertibility risk; when the reserve position weakens, governments may restrict currency transfers, and because this threatens the project's capacity to convert revenue into the base currency, it is a core concern of the credit structure.
