English Definition
Nominal revenue restated in constant purchasing-power terms, revealing the change in the genuine magnitude of income. In project finance this distinction exposes a critical weakness: if the escalation index in a PPA or offtake contract runs below inflation, real revenue erodes year on year even as nominal revenue appears to rise, and a project left to a merchant tail at the end of the debt tenor cannot recover that erosion. The experienced financier therefore examines the base and, above all, the cap on the revenue escalator before the headline price, because a capped escalator in a high-inflation environment is a structural transfer of real value from the sponsor to the offtaker that no favourable opening tariff offsets.
