English Definition
The concept locating the part of the economy that actually produces goods and services, set against the intermediation activity of the financial sector. Project finance sits precisely at the intersection of the two: the special-purpose vehicle is a productive asset belonging to the real sector, yet the cash flow it generates is structured to service the claims of the financial sector. The soundness of that relationship turns on how far the variability of real-sector cash generation is reconciled with the rigidity of financial obligations; the gap between operational flexibility on the production side and the fixed calendar of debt service is the underlying cause of most restructurings, not the headline revenue shortfall that triggers them.
