The sale price actually obtained on the disposal of an asset; unlike an estimate or book value, it is the concrete figure crystallised at the end of the transaction. In asset sales and M&A exits, the gap between the realisation price and the previously marked value is often a quiet signal of how optimistically the valuation assumptions were set. The seasoned investor tracks the ratio of a portfolio's historical realisation prices to its carrying values as the most honest gauge of a manager's valuation discipline; a systematic shortfall opens the credibility of the forward marks to question, since a house that consistently exits below its holds is telling you its NAV is a target rather than a measurement.
