An invoice bearing a record of payment — that is, evidenced as having been settled — proving not merely that the debt arose but that it was discharged. In project finance this document performs a concrete verification function in the certification of construction-period drawdowns: the lender's independent engineer confirms, through receipted invoices, that the expenditure was genuinely made before releasing funds. This discipline secures that the drawn funds actually went to the items the contract contemplated and limits the risk of financing items paid in advance but not yet delivered — a control that matters most on long-lead equipment, where a prepayment against an unbuilt turbine is precisely the exposure the receipted-invoice requirement is designed to exclude from the loan.
