English Definition
A banking annotation used when the drawee bank declines to pay a cheque and returns it to the payee referring them back to the drawer, in practice usually signalling insufficient funds or a problem on the account. Banks favour this neutral wording over a blunt statement that funds are insufficient, to manage the reputational and potential defamation exposure between drawer and drawee. In a project context, such a return on a supplier payment is an early and quiet indication of counterparty liquidity strain, worth more than the formal financials that lag it by a quarter.
