English Definition
Used in two distinct senses: financially, the restructuring of an insolvent company's debts to make it a viable going concern again; physically, the repair and modernization of existing infrastructure to extend its operating life. In project finance the second sense stands out in rehabilitate-operate-transfer structures; unlike greenfield construction, rehabilitating an existing asset reduces construction risk while raising the due-diligence burden around the underlying asset's latent defects. Lenders in these structures typically require the rehabilitation scope to be fixed by a technical adviser's report and the out-of-scope structural risks to be covered by a sponsor guarantee.
