Direct costs a consultant or contractor incurs within a scope of work and, under the contract, passes through to the client at cost, standing outside the fee itself, with travel, accommodation, expert reports, and official charges as typical examples. In advisory contracts the definition and cap of this line is the quiet arena of the margin discussion; whether an expense is passed on at cost or with an administrative percentage added forms a visible share of the total on long engagements. In project finance separating these costs from the fixed fee in the budget is essential for cost control and reimbursement audit.
