English Definition
An automated device through which a bank offers customers electronic transactions at locations away from its premises, of which the ATM and similar terminals are the typical instances. The concept's origin lies in the regulatory question of whether such a device counts as a branch, since classifying a terminal as a branch would subject it to branch-establishment restrictions and the attendant capital and licensing obligations. That debate reveals how far the geographic reach of banking infrastructure is, at bottom, a legal rather than a merely technical question.
