English Definition
The provision of the use of property or equipment for a period against payment, without any transfer of ownership, denoting both the letting activity and the income arising from it. In project finance equipment rental can convert capital expenditure into operating cost and so provide off-balance-sheet funding, yet the progressive move of accounting standards to bring operating leases onto the balance sheet has made the effect of such structures on debt capacity and covenant ratios far more visible than before. The choice between renting and buying is thus a structural, not merely a tax, question.
