English Definition
The conception of interest as a rent paid for the use of capital over a period, treating money as a hired factor of production whose unit price is the interest rate. This framing explains the economic substance of the cost of capital in project finance, for the lender demands this rent in return for forgoing the alternative use of the funds and for bearing risk. A project's interest burden is thus the combined price of the time and risk dimensions of capital, and it creates value only where the project's return exceeds it.
