English Definition
A written notice by which a party formally requests that a given transaction be carried out or a right exercised; it serves as the triggering document in operations such as calling a guarantee, drawing a loan or utilizing a letter of credit. The form and content of the letter are often fixed in advance by a template scheduled to the relevant contract. In project finance the wording of a request letter matters more than it appears: in on-demand guarantee structures the letter's strict conformity to the contractual format secures unconditional payment, while the slightest deviation gives the bank grounds to delay or refuse.
