English Definition
A specialist who systematically studies a subject, gathering, analyzing and reporting findings; in a financial context, typically the capital-markets analyst who evaluates companies, sectors or macroeconomic developments. The researcher's independence is protected by managing conflicts of interest, which is the foundation of a report's credibility. In project finance the counterpart is the independent expert who tests the project's assumptions from the outside; the task lenders assign to this expert is not to endorse the sponsor's narrative but to find and price its weakest link, since the real gatekeeper of financial close is often the outcome of this independent review.
