English Definition
An endorsement written on the back of a negotiable instrument or cheque that bars its further negotiation or ties it to a defined purpose, the 'for deposit only' notation being the most common example. It limits the holder's authority to circulate the instrument freely and ensures payment is channeled solely to the named party or purpose; in project collections, such restrictive notations are used to force incoming payments directly into a pledged escrow account rather than into general funds.
