The accumulated net profits a company has earned across periods and retained rather than paid out as dividends, forming the internally generated component of equity as distinct from paid-in capital. In project finance, retained earnings are a sponsor's principal means of strengthening the equity base without injecting fresh cash; yet a distribution lock-up in the credit agreement governs whether that balance is actually accessible, so the figure on the books and the cash a sponsor can extract are frequently not the same thing.
