English Definition
A contractual deduction by which the employer withholds a set percentage (typically 5-10%) of the contractor's progress payments to secure faultless completion and the remedying of latent defects. The withheld sum is usually released in two tranches: half at practical completion and the balance at the end of the defects-liability period. In practice, because the contractor resents having that cash tied up, the deduction is frequently substituted by a retention bond of equal amount, which frees working capital while preserving the employer's security.
