Bir yatırımdan elde edilen net kazancın, o yatırımın maliyetine oranlanmasıyla bulunan ve sermayenin ne ölçüde verimli kullanıldığını basitçe özetleyen orandır. Hesabı sezgisel olsa da paranın zaman değerini içermediği için kaba bir ölçüdür ve farklı vadelere yayılan projeleri yanıltıcı biçimde eşitler. Proje finansmanında ROI bu yüzden tek başına nadiren yeterli sayılır; zira aynı ROI'yi üreten iki yatırımdan biri kazancını iki yılda diğeri on yılda verdiğinde, karar mercii çoğu kez IRR ve geri ödeme süresine döner.
English Definition
A ratio that relates the net gain from an investment to its cost, offering a simple summary of how productively capital has been deployed. Intuitive as the calculation is, it remains a crude measure because it ignores the time value of money and misleadingly equates projects spread over different horizons. In project finance ROI is therefore rarely sufficient on its own, since where two investments yield the same ROI but one returns its gain in two years and the other in ten, the decision-maker usually turns to IRR and the payback period.
