English Definition
An audit method that estimates the error rate in a population by evaluating each unit in a sample on a binary basis — whether it possesses a given characteristic, compliant or not, defective or not; the result is a proportion, not an amount. In project finance and in the lender's independent auditor's work the method is used in tests of controls; whether project disbursement requests followed the approval process, for instance, is tested by attribute sampling, and a finding above the tolerable deviation rate directly affects reliance on the control environment and the tightness of the drawdown process.
