English Definition
The set of documents evidencing the shipment and carriage of goods, its typical members being the bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, insurance policy and survey reports. In documentary commodity finance these are the basis not only of logistics but of payment; the bank does not see the goods, it sees the documents, and conditions payment on their strict compliance with the terms of the letter of credit, so that even a comma or date mismatch can ground a refusal as a discrepancy, a rigor that defines the document-centric nature of commodity finance.
