English Definition
A reference project of comparable scale, technology and conditions used as a basis for benchmarking an investment's cost, schedule, technical performance or risk profile. In project finance the realized data of similar projects is the primary anchor against which the independent engineer and lenders test the sponsor's projections; but the validity of the comparison depends on normalizing differences in jurisdiction, supply-chain conditions and contract structure, since two projects that look alike on the surface can diverge materially in their true cost base owing to permitting regime and site conditions.
