English Definition
A six-digit routing number in the United Kingdom and Irish banking systems that identifies a specific bank and branch, enabling a domestic payment to be addressed together with the account number. It differs from an IBAN in being local and, on its own, insufficient across borders. Its importance in structuring payment infrastructure and collection arrangements is that direct-debit and bulk-payment systems depend on it; matching an escrow or collection account to the correct sort code ensures project revenue is routed without delay, and a mismatch breaks the automated reconciliation chain and disrupts cash pooling.
