English Definition
The principle that economic growth should be achieved in a way that preserves environmental integrity and social balance without depleting the resource base of future generations — a concept embedded in the mandate language of development finance institutions. It differs from mere growth in testing the outcome simultaneously along three axes: economic, environmental and social. The sharp edge of this principle in practice is conditionality; many international financial institutions appraise a project not only on its commercial return but on its conformity to this benchmark, so the principle acts not as an abstract commitment but as an actual gate before the credit decision, where failure to observe the environmental and social action plan can halt disbursement.
