English Definition
A cheque whose date has aged past the point at which banks hesitate to pay it — used in practice as a synonym for a stale cheque, typically on a six-month threshold. From an accounting standpoint, long-unpaid cheques accumulate as open items in bank reconciliation and distort the true picture of the cash position, so periodic reconciliation must clear them by reversing entry. In corporate treasury the volume of outstanding stale-dated instruments is a quiet gauge of the discipline of payment and collection processes, and a persistent balance points to reconciliation that is not being worked.
