English Definition
Goods manufactured to established, widely accepted technical specifications rather than to a customer-specific design, and therefore interchangeable and readily available in the market. In project procurement, using standard-specification goods lowers operational risk by reducing dependence on a single supplier and widening the spare-parts and maintenance ecosystem; bespoke equipment, by contrast, may optimise performance but creates substitution difficulty if the supplier fails or a warranty dispute arises. Lenders' technical advisers accordingly examine the extent to which critical equipment rests on standard specifications, since standardisation raises the quality of security from the standpoint of both resale value and the project's long-term operability.
