English Definition
The equity or equity-like funds that finance the formation and earliest operating phase of a venture or project company before it generates revenue. This capital carries the highest risk, since it converts into sunk cost while no proven cash flow yet exists and its collateral value is limited. In project finance start-up capital is typically positioned as sponsor equity, and lenders impose full injection of this first-loss layer — equity first or pro rata — as a condition precedent before any debt draw; the first tranche out of the sponsor's own pocket is the most tangible signal of commitment to the project.
