English Definition
A label for the income statement favoured by not-for-profit organisations and certain US-registered entities, presenting the net result of revenues and expenses arising from operations. The emphasis on "operations" signals the separation of non-operating and extraordinary items. In assessing a portfolio-level holding, this statement should be read segment by segment beneath the consolidated figure, to see which business lines actually generate cash and which survive on cross-subsidy; otherwise a single operating result conceals the internal dispersion of performance.
