English Definition
A security representing an ownership share in a company's capital, carrying a right to distributions and to residual value; in British usage it can also mean inventory, so context is decisive. Ownership combines a residual-income right and a control right. In project finance the project company's shares are frequently pledged to lenders, and this pledge is the backbone of the security architecture, because taking the shares whole, rather than enforcing against assets one by one, lets the lender seize the project as a going concern — licences, contracts and permits intact — so security over the shares is often worth more than security over the assets.
