English Definition
A portfolio of stocks assembled according to a defined criterion; it may represent an index, a sector or a thematic strategy and can be traded in a single transaction. Basketing reduces unsystematic risk by diversifying away single-stock exposure. In corporate finance stock baskets serve as references in block trades and index-derivative pricing, since their constituent weights and rebalancing rules directly determine the derivative counterparty's hedging cost, and a basket holding illiquid constituents carries a slippage cost invisible in theory but surfacing on execution, so a gap exists between its paper value and its liquidation value.
