The quantity of goods, materials and finished products a business physically holds at a given date, verifiable by a physical count. This figure can diverge from the recorded book inventory; the gap between count and ledger signals shrinkage, theft or an accounting cut-off error. In inventory-secured lending, stock on hand forms the core of the borrowing-base certificate, and lenders periodically verify it through independent counts or field exams; the stock level at the cut-off date directly caps the maximum drawing available, making count discipline a covenant matter rather than mere housekeeping.
