English Definition
The function of overseeing, directing and inspecting the execution of work, particularly construction. Under FIDIC-style contracts the engineer's superintendence is not merely technical; it carries certification authority that approves milestones and thereby releases payment, which makes its independence a direct bankability question. Lenders resist superintendence exercised by a party aligned with the contractor, since certification loses its meaning once the entity that triggers payment shares an interest with the entity performing the work.
