English Definition
The person who secures payment of a negotiable instrument by giving an aval, joining the instrument's debt through their signature much as the principal obligor would. If the giver has not stated for whom the aval is given, the law presumes it is given for the drawer, a presumption parties dispute most often in practice, since it fixes the direction of the recourse chain. On paying, the surety acquires a right of recourse under bills law against the party guaranteed and against those liable earlier on the instrument.
