English Definition
The official currency of Taiwan, relatively stable under the managed float of a current-account-surplus economy. In project finance the Taiwan dollar carries a context that has come to the fore with the financing of the country's offshore wind portfolio in recent years: because the long-term debt in these projects is structured partly in local currency and partly in foreign currency, the balance between local banks' lending appetite and hedging cost sets the optimal currency composition of the capital structure. The long-dated bond demand of domestic pension and insurance funds is a structural factor keeping local-currency debt relatively attractive against foreign-currency financing.
