English Definition
A payment received by a creditor that has not been allocated to any specific debt or obligation owed by the debtor. Under many legal systems, the creditor may apply the payment to the most burdensome obligation unless the debtor specifies otherwise at the time of payment. Proper appropriation of payments is essential for accurate ledger reconciliation and for determining the outstanding balance on each account.
