English Definition
Ownership of a property or asset that is free from any mortgages, liens, easements, or other encumbrances that could restrict the owner's right to transfer or pledge it. An unencumbered title is a prerequisite for most real estate transactions and project finance security packages. Title searches and legal opinions confirming unencumbered status provide lenders with the assurance needed to accept the asset as collateral.
