A form of private equity financing provided to early-stage, high-growth-potential companies in exchange for equity ownership or convertible debt. Venture capital investors assume significant risk in anticipation of above-market returns generated through the successful scaling and eventual exit of portfolio companies via initial public offering or acquisition. Beyond capital, venture capitalists typically provide strategic guidance, industry expertise, and access to networks that support portfolio company growth.
