Employee compensation entitlements that have become unconditionally owned by the employee and cannot be forfeited, regardless of future employment status. Vesting typically occurs over a defined period of service or upon the achievement of specific performance milestones. Common vested benefits include pension contributions, stock options, and deferred compensation. In accounting, vested benefits represent an obligation of the employer that must be recognised as a liability on the balance sheet.
