English Definition
The service of keeping goods in a warehouse and the cost that accrues for it. In commodity finance, storage cost — rent, insurance, handling, shrinkage — is often overlooked yet is a decisive component of the cost-of-carry calculation, since the return on holding goods for forward sale is positive only when it exceeds storage and financing cost. Correctly modelling storage expense therefore determines whether a stock-holding strategy is genuinely profitable in contango markets.
