English Definition
The activity of buying goods from producers and reselling them in large lots to retailers or other commercial users rather than to final consumers. It bridges production and retail in the value chain and generates margin through the functions of holding stock, distribution and extending credit. In financing wholesale businesses, lenders focus on inventory and receivables turnover, because this line's profit rests not on thin unit margin but on the velocity of working capital, and the gap in payment terms between supplier and customer, a negative or positive working-capital cycle, is the real lever determining a wholesaler's own financing need.
